RIO DE JANEIRO -- European Olympic head Patrick Hickey of Ireland is spending the closing days of the Rio Games in a prison after his arrest in a ticket-scalping scandal, authorities said Friday. The 71-year-old International Olympic Committee executive was denied bail after his legal team argued unsuccessfully that he was being detained illegally following his early-morning arrest Wednesday at his hotel.Police only began questioning Hickey on Thursday because he was hospitalized for a day with chest pains following his arrest. Hickey has now been transferred to the sprawling Bangu prison complex in Rio, a police statement said. Hickeys Brazilian lawyers did not respond to an email seeking comment.Hickey has temporarily stepped down from his IOC duties, including his post on the ruling executive board and heading the influential umbrella group for Europes Olympic bodies. The former judo athlete is facing charges of conspiracy, ticket scalping and ambush marketing after Brazilian authorities alleged he was part of a plot to make $3 million by illegally selling Rio Games tickets above face value.Police said Irelands Olympic body helped transfer tickets to an unauthorized vendor who would set high fees and disguise the transaction as a hospitality package. The Olympic Council of Ireland board said it will not comment Hickeys criminal case, adding that he is receiving his own legal advice and is entitled to natural justice and due process.Hickey built his power base through judo, going on to lead the Irish Olympic team at the 1988 and 1992 Games before being elected to the IOC in 1995. He joined the executive board four years ago.The OCI has halted the earlier internal investigation established by Hickey before his arrest and set up an independent one. The Dublin-based organization said it will cooperate fully with a non-statutory government inquiry at home into the scandal.Rio police made their first arrests in the investigation last week when Kevin James Mallon, from the British hospitality provider THG, was held in Rio. Authorities have also issued warrants for four more executives at the company. Some Irish tickets for the Olympics opening ceremony with a face value of $1,400 were sold for $8,000, police said. The board of the Olympic Council of Ireland regrets that recent events in Brazil have overshadowed the many great performances of Team Ireland at the Rio Olympic Games, the organization said. Argentina winger Ezequiel Lavezzi and France midfielder Blaise Matuidi scored, with star striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic setting up both despite having a poor game by his high standards. Forward Eduardo gave Ajaccio the lead in the sixth minute after being set up by right winger Benjamin Andre, and the Corsican side looked comfortable in the first half, with the lively Johan Cavalli causing problems with his probing runs from midfield. http://www.zapatillasbaratasnike.es/ . The scientists believe the small earthquake during a Marshawn Lynch touchdown was likely greater than Lynchs famous "beast quake" touchdown run three years ago, which also came against New Orleans during a playoff game. Young formally announced his retirement Friday after returning to Rangers Ballpark, his baseball home for all but the last of his 13 major league seasons. Home-ice advantage is real in sliding sports, and the U.S. is hoping it rings true again this weekend. All three U.S. national sliding programs are hosting World Cups starting Friday. The bobsled and skeleton tour is back in Lake Placid, New York -- where temperatures well below zero are expected on Friday -- and luges international schedule continues in Park City, Utah, where Tucker West of the U.S. will aim for a third consecutive win.Its the first time both World Cup circuits have simultaneously been in the U.S. since December 2013.There really is a home-track advantage for us, said U.S. bobsled driver Steven Holcomb, who probably has more runs on the track at Mount Van Hoevenberg in Lake Placid than anyone else. If you go to any 100-meter track in the world, its 100 meters. If you race a mile, its a mile, wherever you are. Bobsledding, its never the same from one track to another. Its a huge advantage.Thats a big part of why Wests first two career wins were at Lake Placid, the track he knows best. Winning on other tracks, thats a sign of becoming a true international contender.West prevailed in Lake Placid two weeks ago, then won in a one-run race last weekend at Whistler, British Columbia. Training and racing for the entire week was condensed to one day because a shipment of sleds was delayed nearly four days after a massive snowstorm snarled traffic.Park City is a track where U.S. teammate Chris Mazdzer won the mens singles race last season. Its kind of hard to put a finger on what the secret sauce is, West said. Obviously, Lake Placid is a track that I know and llove.dddddddddddd Ive taken many runs there, so Im comfortable there. Whistler, on the other hand, was just a crazy situation for us.West is eighth in the World Cup luge overall mens standings, significant because hes gotten points in just two of the four races. He was disqualified from the season-opening race in Igls, Austria, because he and his sled slightly exceeded weight limits. By getting DQed there, he was also ineligible to compete in the Sprint Cup race that same weekend. So even though his competitors have had as many as four chances to pick up points, West is still within striking distance of the World Cup lead.Tucker didnt come out of anywhere, Mazdzer said. Hes been consistent the last two years. Hes been really solid. To be honest, not much has changed in him. Hes consistent on race day. Hes got a great start. ... I would expect him to be consistent and thats what Im impressed with.USA Luge won five medals at the World Cup in Park City last season; USA Bobsled and Skeleton won three in Lake Placid last season, all of them gold. This is the first competition for bobsled and skeleton athletes since international officials pulled out this seasons world championships from Russia this week. Several sliders cited doping-related concerns as a reason they were considering a boycott. While thats certainly added some drama, Holcomb said the Americans know this is a critical weekend. Its always big for us to be in Lake Placid, Holcomb said.
