CHANCE: Ferguson began his college career at Antworten

CINCINNATI, Ohio -- Three players made the All-Star team. A seldom-used player drove in three runs. All in all, a pretty good day for the Reds. Cesar Izturis drove in three runs, matching his season total, and Mat Latos doubled home two more on Saturday, rallying Cincinnati to a 13-4 victory over the Seattle Mariners. It was Cincinnatis second victory over Seattle in interleague play. The Mariners are 9-2 overall in the series. "It was one of those days," Izturis said. The day will be remembered more for what happened just before the game began. The Reds learned that first baseman Joey Votto had been voted by fans as an All-Star starter for the second straight year, the first time thats happened to a Cincinnati player since Barry Larkin in 1999-2000. Joining him in the starting infield is Brandon Phillips, the first time a Reds second baseman has been voted to start since Joe Morgan in the 1970s. They became only the fifth set of teammates to start an All-Star game at first and second base. "Its a real honour," Votto said. "This year it will be special because Im playing beside Brandon. "Everything is finite. There will be an end to my career. I want to enjoy as many of these experiences as I can." Phillips played in the All-Star games in 2010 and 2011 as a reserve. "I want to thank the fans for voting for me," Phillips said. "Its a dream come true. Its something that I can check off my goals." Closer Aroldis Chapman also was chosen for the second straight year. The Reds overcame another early deficit to get their second win over Seattle. Manager Dusty Baker decided to give Izturis his ninth start at shortstop so he could get some at-bats and stay sharp. Izturis singled home a run in the second and doubled home two more in the fifth off Jeremy Bonderman (1-3). Baker had told Izturis on Friday that hed be in the starting lineup for the second game of the series. "Dustys always good about letting you know," Izturis said. "And thats good, especially when you dont play every day. Its definitely all mental. Its not that easy, but we know what were here for." The Reds scored more runs than in any game since a 13-7 win over Milwaukee on May 11. It was the second-most runs allowed by the Mariners, trailing a 16-9 loss to Houston on April 9. Latos (8-2) matched his season high with four walks in six innings, but also doubled his RBI total by driving in a pair of runs with a double. He allowed six hits and fanned 11 while throwing 111 pitches. Kyle Seager drove in three runs off Latos with a homer and a sacrifice fly. Bonderman was coming off his shortest start since 2007, going only 3 1-3 innings during a 7-6 loss to the White Sox on June 30. He lasted longer, but didnt fare much better. The right-hander went five innings, allowing seven hits, five walks and six runs. Five of them scored with two outs. For the second day in a row, the Mariners got a two-run homer in the first inning to jump-start the offence. Nick Franklin had a two-run shot off Mike Leake during a 4-2 win on Friday night. Endy Chavez singled and Seager followed with his 13th homer. Seattle has 21 homers in the first inning this season, most in the majors. Latos helped the Reds pull ahead to stay with two outs in the fourth. He doubled home two runs and scored from second on Shin-Soo Choos single for a 4-3 lead, sprinting around third to beat the throw from centre fielder Dustin Ackley. "That was a good time to get a hit," Latos said. "The offence picked me up. Thirteen runs is always good, especially when I put us in 2-0 hole." Izturis doubled home two more in the fifth, and Jay Bruce added a two-run double during a three-run sixth that put it away. From filmmaker Nanette Burstein (On the Ropes), The Price of Gold revisits the saga that rocked the figure skating world ahead of the 1994 Lillehammer Olympic Winter Games: the assault on Nancy Kerrigan, and the plot that led its way back to her rival Tonya Harding. New Memphis coach Mike Norvell wants to build on the momentum established by his predecessor.Norvell begins his head coaching career this season by taking over for Justin Fuente, who turned around a traditionally losing program before Virginia Tech hired him away. Memphis has gone a combined 19-7 over the last two seasons.I was excited about the direction of where our program has been able to go -- and where I believe we can continue to help it grow in the future, Norvell said. Its been a great transition. The excitement about the things we have in place and the places that were going is pretty remarkable. The biggest challenge facing Norvell is making sure the offense continues moving the ball effectively without Paxton Lynch, the quarterback who teamed up with Fuente to orchestrate one of college footballs most dramatic turnarounds. Lynch left school after his junior season and was drafted by the Denver Broncos in the first round.Taking over for Lynch is former Tennessee quarterback Riley Ferguson.Hes got a great skill set, Norvell said. Hes got a strong arm, can really drive the ball down the field but is extremely accurate.Norvell spent the last four years at Arizona State, where he worked as offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He previously worked on Arizona State coach Todd Grahams staffs at Tulsa and Pittsburgh. But hes quite familiar with the Memphis area from his own playing days as a receiver at Central Arkansas. He believes Memphis has the elements in place to continue winning even in a new era that doesnt include Fuente or Lynch. Were excited about the things that are in place, Norvell said. We believe in the values of our program and what were going to accomplish. Now we just have to get out there and start getting it done. Here are some things to watch about Memphis.FERGUSONS SECOND CHANCE: Ferguson began his college career at Tennessee but never played a down for the Volunteers. After redshirting in 2013 and participating iin spring practice the following year, Ferguson transferred in the summer of 2014.dddddddddddd After spending the 2015 season at Coffeyville (Kansas) Community College, Ferguson is back in the state of Tennessee as Memphis starting quarterback.ANOTHER SEC EXPORT: Ferguson isnt the only former Southeastern Conference player set to make an impact for Memphis. Safety Jonathan Cook, who spent the 2013 and 2014 seasons at Alabama, should give the Tigers secondary a boost. Cook had 61 tackles last season at Garden City (Kansas) Community College.EXPERIENCED BLOCKERS: Memphis offensive line features four returning starters in tackles Gabe Kuhn and Trevon Tate, center Drew Kyser and guard Christopher Roberson. That group helped Memphis set school single-season records in total points (522) and yards (6,330) last year.SOLID SPECIAL TEAMS: Kicker Jake Elliott and punter Spencer Smith are both back after filling those roles last season. Elliott made all his extra-point attempts and went 23 of 28 on field goals last season and was a finalist for the Lou Groza Award, given annually to the nations top kicker.RUNNING BACK CONCERNS: Although Doroland Dorceus is back after rushing for a team-high 659 yards last season, the transfers of Jarvis Cooper and Jamarius Henderson leave Memphis without much depth in the backfield. That could create an opportunity for freshman Darrell Henderson.PREDICTION: The losses of Fuente and Lynch make it natural to assume the Tigers take at least a small step backward. Memphis still features enough talent to produce a third straight winning season, but a 7-5 record plus a bowl invitation seems more likely than a repeat of the 10-3 campaign in 2014 or the 9-4 mark from last season.SEASON OPENER: The Tigers host Southeast Missouri State on Sept. 3.---College football website: ' ' '
