Washington State sophomore linebacker Logan Tago will be suspended from the football team after being charged with second-degree felony robbery and fourth-degree misdemeanor assault, university president Kirk Schulz told Spokane TV station SWX on Tuesday. The charges, stemming from a June incident, were filed Monday. Washington State policy prohibits athletes charged with felonies from playing. But Cougars coach Mike Leach told the media on Monday that he hoped Tago would continue to be able to play.If I have anything to do with it, hell play til hes proven guilty, Leach said. Were going to presume people innocent until proven guilty around here.On Wednesday, Washington State AD Bill Moos issued a statement that Tago would be permitted to practice with the team, at Leachs discretion.I do believe Logan to be a fine young man, Moos said in the statement. Unfortunately, it appears during the incident in question he did not represent the high standards we expect from our student-athletes at WSU. As previously stated, we will now see the legal process through before making any further determination.A team spokesman clarified that while Tago is eligible to practice, hes not allowed to play in games, per department policy that says if someones been charged with a felony, he cant compete in outside competition.Tagos first appearance in Whitman County Superior Court was pushed back from Oct. 28 to Nov. 4, meaning he probably will miss at least the next three games, against UCLA, at Arizona State and at Oregon State. The Cougars host Arizona on Nov. 5.According to multiple reports, a 23-year-old Pullman, Washington, man was mugged June 4 by a group of men who demanded the case of beer he was carrying. When the man refused, he allegedly was assaulted and suffered a concussion. The man identified Tago as one of the assailants. The felony robbery charge carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and a $20,000 fine.
