The Toronto Blue Jays apologized to the Baltimore Orioles and Major League Baseball after a fan at Rogers Centre threw a beer can that narrowly missed the head of Baltimore outfielder Hyun Soo Kim in the American League wild-card game Tuesday night. On the heels of one of the most competitive and exhilarating baseball games in our clubs history, it is extremely unfortunate that the irresponsible actions of one individual would detract from the game on the field and tarnish an otherwise memorable night, the team said in a statement released Wednesday. The team said it will enact heightened security measures and alcohol policies that will ensure the fan experience and safety of everybody involved. The man alleged to have thrown the can has come forward. The incident occurred in the seventh inning of the Blue Jays 5-2 win.Toronto police said they were investigating and on Wednesday evening released a photo of the man they alleged was responsible, urging him to turn himself in.I contacted Toronto police ... and identified myself as the person in the photo, Ken Pagan wrote in an email to The Canadian Press, adding he cannot say much else. The Toronto Sun says it has identified the man in the photo as Pagan,?who says he is in the picture but did not throw the beer. The Blue Jays said that the individual responsible is not welcome back to the stadium. Team spokesman Erik Grosman said Tuesday that the fan was not ejected because he took off before police had a chance to nab him.Major League Baseball has spoken with the Blue Jays about banning cans from the seats at Rogers Centre.Weve also talked to the Blue Jays about the policies with respect to the serving of alcohol, MLB commissioner Rob Manfred said. No cans, those sorts of things, to make sure that we have as positive an environment going forward as possible. The Toronto Sun, which said Pagan was an employee of Postmedia and formerly of Sun Media, reported earlier Wednesday night it had contacted Pagan and that he suggested the police might not have it right, saying he was drinking out of a cup.The newspaper, owned by Postmedia, also reported that Pagan suggested that the pictures on Twitter?indicate he had a cup in his hand after the can was tossed.Id love to tell you what happened and my story ... but I cant say anything, Pagan said.As Kim settled under a fly ball off the bat of Melvin Upton Jr., the can sailed past him and landed on the turf. Baltimore center fielder Adam Jones angrily pointed into the stands and yelled into the crowd.Baltimore manager Buck Showalter emerged from the dugout and walked all the way to left field to register his displeasure with the umpiring crew before returning to the dugout.Someone threw a beer down at my player, Jones said. Thats about as pathetic as it gets between the lines. You dont do that. I dont care how passionate you think you are. Yell, cuss, scream, tell us were horrible. We get that. Were the opposition. We completely understand that. To throw something at a player, thats as pathetic as it gets.Something like that should never happen. Its the first time for me and hopefully the last, Kim said through an interpreter. In the confusion that followed, Jones said he and Kim were taunted with racial slurs.Ive heard that so much while playing baseball, I dont even care, Jones said. Call me what you want.We hear everything -- people cussing you and flipping you off. I get it. Thats fine. Were here to play baseball, nothing more, nothing less. And to put us in harms way just isnt part of the game. Its not part of any sport. The Blue Jays said the safety of fans, staff, players and visiting teams was paramount and promised to bring in heightened security measures and alcohol rules for future games, though it did not provide details. We hope the focus will remain on the exciting play on the field, and that our fans will express their passionate support for the Blue Jays while demonstrating a level of respect and responsibility that has made Rogers Centre one of the best atmospheres for families and fans of baseball, it said.A number of baseball fans took to Twitter to express their outrage, and distance themselves from what many called inexcusable behavior.Toronto Mayor John Tory, speaking on CFRB radio, called the fan a loon ball.Though Manfred referred to it being a rare ... event in one of our ballparks, this was the third such incident at Rogers Centre in the past three years.Blue Jays fans tossed bottles and debris on the field during Game 5 of last seasons AL Division Series against the Texas Rangers. The fans were upset by the call that let Rougned Odor score from third after catcher Russell Martins throw back to the mound deflected off Shin-Soo Choos bat.In May 2013, a Blue Jays fan threw a drink at Orioles outfielder Nate McLouth during a game at Rogers Centre.Information from ESPNs Jerry Crasnick, The Associated Press and The Canadian Press was used in this report. LOS ANGELES -- A central theme in the opening weeks of the NHL season has been the rash of significant injuries that have sidelined marquee players. Its no different for the New Jersey Devils and the Los Angeles Kings when they meet on Saturday afternoon at Staples Center. The Devils (9-4-3) continue their Life Without Taylor saga on the third stop in their five-game road trip. New Jersey lost their most explosive offense threat, left winger Taylor Hall to a left knee injury suffered in its 4-2 win over Buffalo last Saturday and his absence will reinforce the Devils reliance on their tight-checking defensive style that ranks them second in the NHL in goals against average. While its no surprise that starting goaltender Corey Schneider has posted quality numbers in net (7-4-2 record, 2.21 goals-against average, .926 save percentage), the work of backup Keith Kincaid has been as strong (2-0-1 record, 1.66 GAA, .944 save percentage). With the tandems performance between the pipes, the Devils are off to a surprising start despite being tied for last in the Metropolitan Division in goals scored. Also impacting the offense is the absence of Mike Cammalleri who is dealing with an undisclosed personal issue and hasnt played since November 8.Without two of their best offensive weapons, its no surprise the Devils have played a defensive game on the four-game road trip. They beat Dallas 2-1 in overtime on Tuesday and dropped a 3-2 decision to the Anaheim Ducks Thursday but Coach John Hynes refuses to use the absences as an excuse for the loss. The guys we had on the ice can score and are good players, Hynes said after the loss. After we went up 2-0 we got a little bit soft. We could have been harder on the puck in certain areas.Coach John Hynes has been pleased with the teams overall play as he tries to get a more consistent effort from his power-play unit that went 0-for-3 against Anaheim and failed to convert its last 24 chances over seven games.Thats a fair assessment, Hynes said. Theres parts of it that are reallly good and there are times when the power play is doing a lot of good things.dddddddddddd. But its not consistent enough and I think to score you have to be more consistent. You can say you hope one goes in but were not in the hope business. We have to be more consistent in certain areas. The Kings (8-9-1) are trying to stay in the mix for playoff contention while dealing with multiple injuries that are a major reason for its sub-.500 record through 18 games. Every facet of the roster has been impacted, and serious injuries to goaltender Jonathan Quick, left winger Marian Gaborik and defenseman Brayden McNabb have forced coach Darryl Sutter to lean heavily on role players to pick up the slack. The better news for Los Angeles is that another of the walking wounded, center Anze Kopitar is hopeful to return to the lineup against on Saturday after a three-game absence as his injured wrist continues to improve. With pivotal players out its up to the Kings depth players like Devin Setoguchi to provide support. Setoguchi scored his third goal of the season in Thursdays 4-2 win over Edmonton and realizes it is incumbent upon to produce if the Kings are going to break out of their inconsistent play.We have to find a way to be more consistent, its tough. Every team on any given night has a legitimate chance to win, Setoguchi said. We just have to find a consistent way to put together 60-minutes and stick to our game plan. With the Pacific Division appearing to be far weaker than in previous seasons, coach Darryl Sutter knows that every point will be valuable in a division race that could go down to Game 82. He admits that the injuries has weakened his team significantly and is hoping their continued solid play at home will carry them.We arent the same team that we were, Sutter said We have one of the best home records in the National Hockey League and were in a fight for the division.
