Novak Djokovics set point in the opener was majestic... Djokovic recovered from a break down to secure the opener in dramatic fashion. Nadal initially went 4-2 up against the serve, largely thanks to a drop shot that found a home three times in the early stages.Mid-way through the set, Djokovic began finding his rhythm and threatened with some trademark returns from the back of the court. He held a 10-minute game to remain 3-4 down before more excellent work from the back of the court earned Djokovic a break of his own.Djokovic led 6-5 heading into the final game but defeated Nadals serve in a pulsating manner.ddddddddddddAnother Nadal drop shot had him on course for 6-6, but Djokovic converted his fourth set point by winning an astonishing rally. NEW YORK -- A New York Rangers player who died in 2011 of an accidental overdose of prescription painkillers and a minor league hockey player who supplied him with pills are victims of organized sports and its lax attitude toward painkillers, a judge said Thursday.U.S. District Judge Naomi Reice Buchwald commented as she spared Jordan Hart, a former player for the Utah Grizzlies, any prison time at sentencing on his guilty plea to a misdemeanor drug possession charge.Prosecutors had accused the 33-year-old Hart of contributing to the addiction of Derek Boogaard before he died in Minneapolis. Boogaard, who also played for the Minnesota Wild, had resorted to painkillers to cope with numerous hockey-related injuries, including a concussion. The judge, though, said there was no basis to assert that Hart supplied the drugs that killed Boogaard, especially since the autopsy revealed Boogaard had taken a different painkiller than the kind he got from Hart.Hart cried as he read a statement, saying he wanted to apologize to all parties.I am not proud of whats taken place in the past, he said, adding that he has become a better man and would never commit another crime. Before announcing her sentence of a year of probation, Buchwald said: This is obviously a very sad case.Mr. Boogaard and Mr. Hart were victims of organized sports, which did not consider the consequences of supplying large quantities of addictive pain medication to their players, Buchwald said.Hart was receiving prescription painkillers for a shoulder injury when he met Boogaard, who had hockey-related injuries of his own. Both were addicted to painkillers.Prior to the sentencing, Boogaards father, Len, wrote to the judge, saying he wanted Hart to be held responsible for his sons death. He said his sons banking records show large cash withdrawals that coincide with phone calls and trips to see Hart.He said he objected to claims by Harts defense attorneys that he did not blame Hart for his sons death, calling the assertion a vile distortion of the truth. Babe Ruth Yankees Jersey . 10 Texas Rangers jersey for one last time. Young formally announced his retirement Friday after returning to Rangers Ballpark, his baseball home for all but the last of his 13 major league seasons. So when was the last time a team generally regarded as unexpected won the NCAA womens basketball title? That would be 2011, when Texas A&M beat No. 1 seeds Baylor and Stanford, and then fellow No. 2 seed Notre Dame on the way to claiming the championship. The Aggies had a very good team that year, obviously, and you can hardly call a No. 2 seed a Cinderella. But Texas A&M had never won a title before and wasnt a popular pick to win that year.Since then, though, Baylor won as a favorite in 2012, and UConn did the same in 2013-16. When those outside of womens basketball inquired about a dark horse in that time span, it was hard for any of us who follow the game to really believe there was one. (Although No. 5 seed Louisville made a run for it in 2013, with defending champ Baylor its biggest conquest on the way to losing the title game to UConn.)But what about this season? Weve already examined how projections for the national player of the year award and All-American teams might look one way now and rather different when we get closer to seasons end.?Is it a similar scenario for the teams themselves? As the season gets underway Friday, that sense of possibility is in the air more so than has been the case for a while. Or at least everybody is telling themselves that. Well have to see if its actually true. This year is wide open, because you look and say, Who is going to be No. 1? said Notre Dame coach Muffet McGraw, whose team has that distinction in the Associated Press preseason poll. You look at South Carolina, Baylor, Ohio State, Louisville -- theres so many good teams. And obviously, Connecticut, having won four in a row, theyre always in the conversation. But I think youre going to see that No. 1 moving around a little bit, and thats going to be a good thing for the game.UConn coach Geno Auriemma appears to agree with all that. This is a much more realistic picture of what its like in the world of team sports and coaching, Auriemma said of his Huskies being among the teams that have the potential to be champions, not the prohibitive favorites.Weve lived in a world that very few people get to live in. And they may get to live in it once in their caareers.dddddddddddd Some people, twice. But never in a row, 1-2-3-4.Never except for UConn. Yet could the Huskies national-championship string extend to five? Of course it could. UConn, which has won 75 consecutive games, still has a lot of talent, despite losing players who went first-second-third in the WNBA draft. Weve seen UConn rise to the occasion too often to not strongly consider the Huskies as contenders.?Still, the Huskies four-peat last year didnt prevent several other interesting storylines from getting noticed. Perhaps the most gratifying for the participants was the surge in the Pac-12, which got two teams -- Oregon State and Washington -- into the Final Four and felt that, as a conference, it finally got its due.I feel theres a level of responsibility to keep it going, said Cori Close, whose UCLA squad is picked to win the conference this season. Not only to think about our own growth, but how to continue to think strategically about the growth of the conference. And, by extension, the growth of the game nationally.Im not one of the UConn haters in terms of thinking it was bad for the game that they won so much. I dont think so, Close said. I think theyve set a bar thats gotten peoples attention. Like, Wow, the womens game is being played at such a high level. But I also think we need this next phase with other people stepping up to that standard that UConn has done such a great job setting. I think theres this optimism this year, and theres going to be drama in the NCAA tournament. Its an important year to grow the game.Thats a phrase that has been used for a long time, and it can seem trite. Plus, the fact is, other than UConns inevitability, there actually was pretty big drama in the postseason last season, too, with three of the No. 1 seeds -- South Carolina, Notre Dame and Baylor -- all losing before the Final Four. But this season, there does seem a chance that the final page of the script isnt already written. So as we get started, thats something to whet everyones appetite for what were about to see. ' ' '

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Pirates are running out of time. It may already be too late.Ryan Vogelsong pitched four shaky innings in Pittsburghs 8-0 loss to Cincinnati on Sunday, closing a disappointing four-game set against the last-place Reds. The Pirates have dropped 11 of 13 overall to fall off the pace in the NL wild-card race. After Cincinnati got to Vogelsong (3-5) for five runs in the second on its way to a big lead, Pirates manager Clint Hurdle emptied his extensive bench, giving playing time to some younger and little-used players. But Hurdle insisted he isnt throwing in the towel. Not yet. Not for me, he said. My vision is to get us playing better. Thats my thought. Im not going to walk out of here with anything other than knowing I have a job to do. Negative emotions, I dont carry them at all. Frustration isnt going to help me do what I need to do to get those men motivated and continue to play. Discouragement, Im not going to go there. I dont go there. We needed to play better. We didnt. How do we play better? Thats where my focus is.After opening the series with a 4-1 win on Thursday night, the Pirates dropped the last three games. Left fielder Gregory Polanco was ejected by umpire Pat Hoberg for arguing balls and strikes in the third inning of the finale. It was Polancos first career ejection.Cincinnati left-hander Brandon Finnegan (9-10) struck out seven in five innings, but allowed five hits and walked five. The seven strikeouts played for him, Hurdle said. It got him out of the all messes. We werent able to convert in some situations that were there for us with a single, let alone a double, let alone a homer. That would have been great. Our execution in crunch time when we were trying to move or score or (get) a two-out hit has been challenging. ... We werent able to punch through and get that big hit off him.Jumbo Diaz followed Finnegan with two innings and Ross Ohlendorf and Wandy Peralta each got three outs, completing a seven-hitter. The Pirates (69-72) left 10 runners on base and went 1 for 10 with runners in scoring position. The Pirates are always good, Finnegan said. They have a good-hitting team. The Reds and Pirates dont really get along very well. But its nice beating any team, especially winning a series.Cincinnati grabbed control in the second, taking advantage of an error by center fielder Andrew McCutchen and some wildness by Vogelsong. Holt had the big blow, a two-run triple that gave the Reds a 4-0 lead. Eugenio Suarez followed with an RBI single.Vogelsong was charged with six runs and seven hits.Cincinnati (60-82) finished with 13 hits. Joey Votto, one of the hottest hitters in the majors, was the only starting position player to fail to record a hit for the Reds.TRAINING ROOMReds: Alfredo Simon will miss the rest of the year with a right shoulder injury that will require surgery. Sampson will be making his second start in 2015 after starting 12 games in 2016.Pirates: Gerrit Cole (7-9, 3.55 ERA) is expected to return from the disabled list to start Monday at Philadelphia. Cole has been inactive since Aug. 24 with right elbow inflammation. He has made just 20 starts after pitching 32 games in 2015. Air Max Plus Italia . Its huge -- just like the Rangers 42-point improvement in our overall standings, the best of any MLB team. After two seasons languishing in the middle of the pack, the Rangers are a top-20 Ultimate Standings franchise for the fourth time in six years.Whats goodThe Rangers didnt just win -- they won in style, compiling a 36-11 record in one-run games, the best single-season mark by any team in at least a century. Average home attendance was up almost 3,000 per game to 33,461. A solid 20th ranking in coaching is courtesy of Jeff Banister, the third manager in the wild-card era to win division titles in his first two seasons with the club. The Rangers have always ranked high in affordability, and that continued with a No. 13 ranking, the highest of any category. The average ticket price of $23.64 is the fourth lowest in the majors. No team with a winning record has prices that reasonable, which accounts for the teeams No.dddddddddddd 21 bang for the buck.Whats badOther than a disappointing 51st-place showing in title track (which an ALDS sweep wont help), not much is off in Texas. Globe Life Park still rates a very respectable 20th in stadium experience, but the searing Texas heat and the absence of a retractable roof are getting to be too much to bear. The smallest crowd of the year -- 20,720 -- came on an afternoon game in Arlington with a heat index of 105 degrees. Things might change after the Rangers announced plans to build a new, retractable-roof stadium in Arlington, assuming the proposition passes in Novembers election. Taxpayers could be on the hook for a nice portion of the $1 billion price tag, which would give them another reason to sweat.Whats newTexas overcame a rash of injuries to win its second straight AL West title, and fans respected that grittiness, with a 56-point leap in players to 15th overall. There has also been a major thaw in the way fans view co-chairman Ray Davis, as the Rangers rose to No. 31 in ownership, a 43-point vault. The controversial decision to replace franchise icon Nolan Ryan a few years ago still lingered, but it was apparently nothing a few playoff appearances couldnt change.Next: Baltimore Orioles?| Full rankings ' ' '

NEWARK, N.J. -- New Jersey is bringing out the best in Taylor Hall, especially when it comes to game-winning goals.Hall scored 29 seconds into overtime and the Devils won for the second time in two home games, rallying to beat the Minnesota Wild 2-1 on Saturday night. The goal-starved Devils have had each of their five games decided by goal, and Hall has been the difference in their two wins. He had both goals in a 2-1 win over Anaheim this week and combined with former junior hockey teammate Adam Henrique for the winner that ended the Wilds three-game winning streak. Its fun to score any time, but certainly at home in overtime on a Saturday night where we have struggled to score, said Hall, who was acquired in a major trade with Edmonton in the offseason.Hall carried the puck into the Wild zone and dropped a pass after crisscrossing with Henrique. He then went to the net and took the return pass and beat Devan Dubnyk between the pads.It was a good play there, Henrique said. It just opened up, a little crisscross, and then they kind of bit, both guys over. Halls was open so I just tried to get the puck to him and he made a great play to end it.Dubnyk, who made 30 saves, said the play seemed to come out of nowhere. They werent flying or anything, he said. Hes (Hall) a dynamic player. I was able to get over there on him. He likes to rip it, but he had his head up and saw that I was on my feet and moving out at him and he snapped it real quick. After being stoned by Dubnyk on their first 26 shots, PA Parenteau tied it with 8:04 left in regulation. The right wing took a cross-ice pass from Mike Cammalleri and beat Dubnyk with a shot from above the right circle for his second goal of the season.Cory Schneider made 28 saves for the Devils. This feels good, but we cant get on a cycle of win one, lose one, win one, lose one, Schneider said. We have to try to get a couple going, especially with a few (the next three) at home.Joel Eriksson Ek scored for Minnesota in his NHL debut. After helping force a turnover at the Devils blue line, the 19-year-old Swede -- Minnesotas first-round draft pick in 2015 -- rushed to the net and arrived just in time to poke the rebound of a Jason Zucker shot over Schneider a minute into the second period. It felt like the puck was going in in slow motion, Erikkson Ek said.Dubnyk was the difference for much of the game. He made a pad save on Beau Bennett in the second period while flat on his back.Schneider stopped a breakaway by Eric Staal early in the second period with Minnesota ahead 1-0. RIO DE JANEIRO -- As an assistant coach for Britains womens field hockey team, Craig Parnham always admired the United States. Now the head coach of the American womens squad, he recalled why in the moments after a 6-1 rout over Japan at the Olympics last week.USA have always had a huge heart, great spirit, great passion, great drive -- they never give in, Parnham said. When I was working with other teams, we would always see those as big threats of the USA, and when you see it firsthand, you see it for what it is.Just four years ago, those intangible qualities were about all the Americans had going for themselves when they faced elite programs. Parnhams job when the United States hired him in 2013 was to improve the teams skill and fitness and turn the Americans into contenders for major titles. The players bought into his approach, and now the 43-year-old British coach has guided a squad that finished last at the 2012 London Games to a 4-1 record in pool play four years later. The Americans are in a position to make a run at their first medal since earning bronze in 1984. They play Germany in the quarterfinals on Monday. We just are meshing, U.S. striker Katie Bam said. Its just our time. The players met shortly after Parnham became coach, and he left them to decide their goals. Once he learned they wanted to rank among the best teams in the world, he put them in position to make that vision realistic.Hes opened our communication lines, U.S. defender Lauren Crandall said. Hes really allowed us to drive our program. Hes given us the power. Hes told us, figure out your goals, figure out your vision and drive this bus forward.Because the players have the power, they correct themselves. He creates a culture where the team are accountable, USA field hockey executive director Simon Hoskins said. I think that really works with todays modern athlete. To me, he really is the epitome of the modern elite coach. There were plenty of losses along the way. But then, the United States won the Pan American Games in 2015 and finished third in the Champions Trophy event in June. Their No. 5 world ranking is their highest ever. The United States opened the Olympics with 2-1 victories over No. 2 Argentina and No. 3 Australia, then set a U.S. womens Olympic record with six goals against No. 10 Japan. The Americans beat India, then faltered late to drop their final pool play match to Britain. The United States finished second in the pool and already has set a program high for wins at an Olympics. Its been 3+ years of hard work, Parnham said. We got together and established a program we thought was going to be useful. Weve been working on all aspects of our game -- physical, mental, technical, tactical. The victory improved the Czech pairs impressive cup doubles record to 14-1.TORONTO - Munenori Kawasaki and Brett Lawrie shared the left side of the infield on this sun-drenched, cool spring Sunday. In the aftermath of a dramatic four-run ninth inning, which capped a thrilling 6-5 Blue Jays victory over the Orioles to ensure an important series split, it was clear that on this day their positional proximity was their only commonality. There stood Kawasaki post-game, the affable fill-in for the injured Jose Reyes who has achieved cult hero status in Toronto, basking in his finest moment in the major leagues. Hed just hit the two-out, two-run walk off double. Hed just tossed his helmet to the sky in delight as he rounded second base and saw the winning run, Mark DeRosa chugging all the way from first, cross home plate. There stood the ultimate underdog, the unlikely major leaguer, the guy who knows little English but communicates with a smile and a series of one-liners, hamming it up as he consulted a brochure of Japanese-to-English baseball clichés. "I did it," Kawasaki began. "Give me a hug," he jokingly followed. "Lets go," he bellowed to the assembled media. "What happened," was the first question, Kawasaki asked to describe his game-ending heroics. His response: "No ask. Japanese only, please. Im Japanese." Kawasaki, 31, is making the most of an unexpected opportunity. A slap hitter with no power – it seems his only shot at a home run would be of the inside-the-park variety – and a below-average throwing arm, he has exceeded expectations thanks to a tireless work ethic and a willingness to work pitchers. "When Reyes went down, we were scrambling, we didnt know what we were going to do," said manager John Gibbons. "We knew very little about him but hes come up here, hes done a tremendous job for us, he really has. Hes played just a good brand of baseball. You know one thing about the players who come from Japan, theyre fundamentally sound, they play the game the right way and things like that. Hes done a lot of good things for us. It couldnt happen to a better guy. It really couldnt." Juxtapose Kawasaki with Lawrie. There stood the Canadian face of Canadas only Major League baseball franchise, the 23-year-old for whom the world should be his oyster. There stood a highly intense young man who, less than two full years into his big league career, has had his share of brushes with baseballs written and unwritten laws. Lawrie was answering questions not aboout his role in the victory but about an incident of petulant behaviour earlier in that thrilling ninth inning.dddddddddddd When Lawrie came to the plate as the fourth hitter of the ninth, the Jays had scored to cut the deficit to 5-3 and had runners on first and third with nobody out. Lawrie hit a first pitch fly ball to Orioles right fielder Nick Markakis. Adam Lind, the runner at third, smartly held his ground. Lawrie walked, didnt jog or run, up the first base line toward the Jays dugout. As he did so he glared at Lind and third base coach Luis Rivera. Steps from entering the dugout, he began to shout in their direction, miffed at why Lind didnt tag up and score. Moments later, Jose Bautista was trying to calm Lawrie down as he engaged in a heated discussion with Gibbons. Was Lawrie upset that Lind didnt attempt to score, denying him the sacrifice fly and run batted in? Doubtful, given the intensity of the moment its unlikely Lawrie processed such a selfish thought. Lawries out was the first of the inning and the tying run was at first base. More hits were required to square the game and Lind would score then. If Lind is thrown out at home by Markakis, who has a cannon for an arm, it likely derails the rally. Lind and Rivera were in the right. Is it possible this most basic strategy eluded Lawrie? If so, his heart was in the right place but his head wasnt. Lawrie was brief with his post-game explanation. "No not so much heated just kind of caught up in the moment of trying to score runs and come back against those guys was all," he said. Gibbons, a no-nonsense Texan, played the situation cool. "Brett plays to win, hes a very intense guy," said Gibbons. "Weve probably talked this year more than you guys will ever know. I dont want to say hes like my son, were not that tight, but we do talk a lot. He plays to win. Yeah he got a little heated, I got a little heated, what have you but thats over. Its no big deal, those things happen." The Blue Jays have a decision to make. The club could handle the matter internally, give Lawrie a stern talking to and a warning not to repeat the behaviour. The alternative is for the organization, for Gibbons, to take a stand. Lawrie should sit out Monday nights game against the Atlanta Braves. That way, if in the future a similar scenario unfolds, Lawrie may give a second thought to his approach. After all, in team sports, it should always be team and teammates first before all else. PITTSBURGH -- Adam Wainwright is still in search of his best stuff. His bat made sure his best wasnt necessary. The St. Louis ace drove in three runs and survived five occasionally bumpy innings to pick up his first victory since mid-July as the Cardinals drummed the staggering Pittsburgh Pirates 12-6 on Monday.Wainwright hit an RBI-double off Chad Kuhl (3-3) in the second and added a two-run single in the fourth as the Cardinals held on to the second wild card spot in the National League by sending the Pirates to their seventh straight loss.We needed that win, Wainwright said. We need every win that we can get coming down the stretch. Any part that I can play in that is a treat for me, a privilege.Wainwright (10-8) allowed four runs and struck out five as his ERA rose to 4.61 while picking up his first victory since July 16. He hardly needed to be sharp as the Cardinals battered Pittsburghs beleaguered pitching staff. Jedd Gyorko and Matt Adams homered for St. Louis to extend the teams streak of games with at least one home run to a club-record 24.Andrew McCutchen and Adam Frazier hit home runs for the Pirates, who have been outscored 47-22 during their current slide. A week ago Pittsburgh was well within striking distance of the Cardinals for a playoff spot but have fallen 4 1/2 games behind St. Louis and dropped below .500 (67-68) for the first time since July 2.Were trying to figure ourselves out and get out of this and get back to playing baseball the way we want to play, shortstop Jordy Mercer said. We just have to keep going.St. Louis pounded out 14 hits -- eight for extra bases -- against five pitchers and wasted little time getting to Kuhl, who has been steady if not spectacular since joining the rotation full-time a month ago.Wainwrights double to the wall in center field put the Cardinals in front and Stephen Piscottys two-run double later in the inning gave Wainwright an early cushion, one he flirted with giving away. Pittsburgh touched him for two runs in the bottom of the inning but Wainwright avoided major damage.I hate giving up runs after we score, Wainwright said. Thats driving me crazy. But what we did do well there is we held them to two. We could have let that inning get away from us, and we didnt.Jeff Locke came on relief of Kuhl in the third and the Cardinals quickly went to work. Kolten Wongs RBI single against him made it 4-2 and Gyorko opened the fourth with a long home run down the left-field line for his 26th of the year.Wainwrights bloop to left later in the inning pushed St. Louis lead to six runs and allowed Wainwright to leave after five innings in which he needed 93 pitches to get 15 outs.He was at 93 pitches, and were in September, Cardinals manager Mike Matheny said. The first two (innings) were stressful. To me, weve got a lead that we think our bullpen can hold. Heath Streak hopes to help Zimbabwe qualify for the 2019 World Cup by unearthing and exposing the potential of young cricketers and luring back some of its overseas-based stars. Streak, who was appointed national coach on a two-year deal, has been mandated with ensuring Zimbabwe do not miss out on the ODI showpiece, an important source of income for the financially embattled board, but he admitted he needs a deeper player pool to get the job done. There has been a big lack of planning in the past in terms of who is going to replace players. Weve got some really exciting youngsters at the moment playing against Pakistan A and who played in the recent series. I will be looking hard at those youngsters and seeing who can take us through (to the 2019 World Cup), Streak told ESPNcricinfo.Streak identified the likes of Brian Chari, who opened the batting in Zimbabwes recent Test series against New Zealand and then took over the wicket-keeping duties in an emergency, and PJ Moor, who scored 157 for Zimbabwe A against Pakistan A , as two of the talents who could be part of Zimbabwes future but said there are more. Those are young guys who have been given some opportunities and are starting to knock on the door, Streak said. There are a whole group of young guys who have come through our Under-19 system who are being given opportunities now. They are probably a little on the young side but, given enough exposure, especially at A team level, they could be pushed up. I am very excited with the prospects we have. But Streak knows those players will benefit from having some of Zimbabwes more experienced cricketers, especially those who have spent time overseas, back in the set-up. The other thing is trying to work on getting some of the players who have left Zimbabwe to come back and play for the country again, he said. There are a lot of Zimbabwe players who have left. A whole whack of our Under-19 [players] and then people like Brendan Taylor, Kyle Jarvis and Solomon Mire - all these guys doing well.Taylor and Jarvis both retired from international cricket to take up county deals while Mire, who was part of the 2015 World Cup squad, is based in Australia. Asking these players to forego the financial security they left Zimbabwe for will not be easy but Streak hopes with a more stable structure, they can be tempted to head home. They are Zimbabweans and we have invested a lot of time and effort to getting to them to the stage where they are at. Hopefully we can set the platform for them to come back, he said. Thats something that will take a lot of hard work, to make sure they have the confidence and the belief that they can come back and give up what they have overseas and have the confidence to continue to play here.Apart from money, Zimbabwes players also leave because of the uncertainty that stems from lack of fixtures. Without game time, the cricketers are left frustrated and their youngsters do not have the opportunity to be blooded. Streak knows that in order for Zimbabwe to perform better, they need to play more but he is also aware that after the upcoming two-Test series against Sri Lanka and triangular ODI tournament also involving West Indies, Zimbabwe have no fixtures scheduled until next June. That means they could go seven months without top-level cricket and Streak hopes to fill some of that time with matches against any team that is willing. For us, playing cricket, against whoever, is better than not playing cricket at all, he said. We are going to have to play some of the strong Associate countries and possibly some of the big countries like Australia, Pakistan, England, whoevers A team is happy to play against us. The more game time we have, the better we will get.Perhaps whats more worrying for Streak is that Zimbabwes domestic set-up is in limbo after the franchise system was dismantled in favour of a provincial competition. The fixtures for the provincial competition have not yet been announced and even when they are, its unlikely the tournament will have more than a handful of matches per term. For Streak, that means his players are not reaching the standards they need to take on the best; standards they will need to get to the World Cup.Our domestic cricket isnt of a high standard so bridging that gap between our domestic-level cricket and international cricket is quite a big step up, he said. We need somewhere in-between that we can test out our guys and give them game time. Weve seen in the last two series: when we played India, when we started off we really struggled and then towards the end, we started to compete and then again we had a poor first Test against New Zealand and then the second Test we were competitive. The guys need to be playing more consistently at that elite level and the more game time we get is going to be better than just playing domestic cricket. Fausse Air Max 90 Off White . FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. -- Pass-rush help for the Atlanta Falcons is on the way.Veteran linebacker Dwight Freeney was the talk of the Falcons training camp on Wednesday, a day after agreeing to a one-year deal with the team. Freeney, who is expected to arrive Thursday, is an important addition to a defense that ranked last in the league in sacks last season.Coach Dan Quinn said Freeney, 36, will play in nickel packages as a pass-rush specialist. Freeney played a similar role with Arizona last season.Freeney also could be a mentor for such young players as Vic Beasley Jr., the 2015 first-round pick who led the Falcons with four sacks. Freeney had eight sacks in 11 games with Arizona.Beasley is still working to improve his pass-rush skills and said hell be looking for advice from Freeney.Who better to ask than him? Beasley said after Wednesdays practice.Freeney, known for his spin move, has 119 1/2 career sacks, including 107 1/2 in 11 seasons with the Colts. We brought him here to rush, Quinn said, adding every veteran player is expected to share lessons with younger players. That certainly wasnt the case to bring him in to mentor, but I can tell you that any time a guy has had really good success theres things to gain from that, Quinn said. Some of that comes from the young player asking questions, too.Game notes RB Tevin Coleman was held out after rolling his foot on Tuesday. Washington, D.C. (Sports Network) - A pair of teams at opposite ends of the Eastern Conference table will meet at RFK Stadium on Saturday as D.C. United gets set to host the Montreal Impact. Montreal has maintained a position inside the top-three in the East for much of the season, but United has turned out an abysmal campaign that has seen the storied club lose 15 of its 21 matches. D.C. has been cemented to the foot of the overall MLS table as it enters the weekend on 10 points, seven points adrift of next-worst Chivas USA and Toronto FC. United has dropped four of its last five league contests, most recently falling in a 2-1 loss to the New England Revolution at home last weekend. The fact that D.C. reached the semifinals of the MLS Cup playoffs last season has added to the frustration this term, but head coach Ben Olsen still has faith in his roster. "(Luis) Silva is a real piece, and we are looking to add as many real pieces to the club right now," Olsen said. "Ive got one eye here presently on the week-to-week MLS ... I have another eye on the Open Cup, which is a big deal, and finding out what the best team is that we would have out there. And I have my third eye on the future of this club, and thats a very important thing right now. I still believe in the future of this club and a bunch of these guys I have in this locker room." Like United, Montreal had experienced a poor stretch when it brought a five- game winless run into its clash with Sporting Kansas City last weekend, but the Impact were able to end the poor spell thanks to Blake Smiths late goal, which gave the Canadian club a 1-0 victory. "The win was huge for us today and thats all that really needs to be said," Smith said after the match. "We fought hard and played the entire 90 plus minutes and we deserved the win. I want to come in and give the team a spark and help for one final push when I come in the game." While Smith stole the headlines with his dramatic winner in the final minute of stoppage time, head coach Marco Schallibaum was quick to disperse credit to the rest of the team, namely the defensive unit. "We had another good game defensively today," Schallibaum said. "They had very few scoring chances. We played right up until the very end and we never gave up tonight, even in stoppage time and for me as a coach, it was a happy ending when you make a change and bring a player who scores the winning goal for us. We deserve to win. Its important that we point out that we didnt steal this game in the final minutes. We earned it all game long." The Impact, level with Red Bull New York on 35 points apiece, enter Saturdays match at RFK Stadium within one point of first-place Sporting. And with Kansas City playing host to the Red Bulls earlier in the day, maximum points could lift Schallibaums team to the Eastern Conference summit, depending on the result at Sporting Park. Mark Sutton talks ESPN through his favourite shots from the dramatic Brazilian Grand Prix.Collision courseCamera - Nikon D5 body | Lens - Nikkor 200-400mm F4 ?| Shutter speed - 1/1000th of a second | Aperture - F5.6 | ISO - 1600I was at Turn 10, the hairpin, but I kept seeing people crash and thought Im in the wrong place here. So I moved up the circuit and its honestly mindblowing how quick they are going in the rain, pulling out of the spray of other cars. I was just photographing the photographers standing trackside and then saw Massa have a moment at the top of the corner. He clipped the barrier and I just kept shooting -- I had the 400 on so it was a bit tight. When he hit the barrier it was more frontal, so it was a bit of the front wing came off. I didnt really see what happened after that -- I just knew I had to get the wide angle on for the next shots of him getting out of the car.Massas final farewellCamera - Nikon D5 body | Lens - 70-200mm F2.8 | Shutter speed - 1/500th of a second | Aperture - F5.6 | ISO - 1600This was a walk of emotion, coming out of the car and waving to the crowd over the barrier. Then one of the marshals gave him a flag and I thought well, thats the shot, as he walked away. I couldnt get any closer because that was the track, he actually shouldnt have been where he was but it created a great picture. I could see the flag was floating above his head so I was waiting for a shot of when I could see his face. When I first sent these back at the media centre I was in such a rush I dont think I sent the best shot from this sequence, I sent one where you cant see his face.I was changing lenses in the rain and it was a rush, to be honest. Youre waiting for those moments to happen and when they do you have a smile on your face in the background, you just go with it. There was still the rest of the race to finish so you have to focus on your job. nRain delayCamera - Nikon D5 body | Lens - Nikkor 70-200 F2.8 | Shutter speed - 1/320th of a second | Aperture - F11 | ISO - 1600The rain delay made for a chaotic afternoon. The race was on-again off-again several times and it made it chaotic. One good shot to come from it was the train of cars behind the safety car. Its not often you get this sort of shot in a race -- theres obviously the formation lap, but this had the added benefit of the spray, creating a good picture.Because of the chaos of the race I missed Marcus Ericssons crash as I had been positioned elsewhere on the circuit.20 down, one to goCamera - Nikon D5 body | Lens - Nikkor 200-400mm F4 | Shutter Speed - 1/640th of a second | Aperture - F6.3 | ISO - 1000This was a good shot between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg on the podium. Often in these last few years we havent seen much between them in the last few seasons when theyve been up there, its often tense and they sometimes act like the other one isnt there. This has been the story of the season, theyve been fighting all year. I think whoever wins they will hug each other and shake hands and say the best man one. I think theres more respect evident between them this year than in previous years. Stitched Jerseys . The Cincinnati Reds remain perfect with their speedy rookie outfielder in the starting lineup. Cheap Jerseys From China . -- For the first time in two months, an opponent was standing up to Alabama. STORRS, Conn. -- UConn coach Bob Diaco says his Huskies are built to play close games.Since the start of last season, 10 of UConns 16 contests have been decided by a single score (eight points or fewer), including all three this season. The latest was a 13-10 win over Virginia (0-3) last Saturday that wasnt secured until Virginias walk-on kicker, Alex Furbank, missed a 20-yard field goal as time expired. But the quality of the opponent doesnt seem to be much of a factor for UConn (2-1).The Huskies are 6-4 in those one-score contests, with wins over Villanova (20-15), Army (22-17), Tulane (7-3), then-No. 13 Houston (20-17), Maine (24-21) and Virginia. The losses came to then No. 22 Missiouri (9-6), South Florida (28-20), Marshall (16-10 in the St. Petersburg Bowl and Navy (28-24).Diaco said the tight margins are more a function of UConns style -- a stingy defense combined with a ball-control style of offense. The analogy I would draw is like a hockey game or a soccer game, he said. Theyre all decided by one goal or two goals when the points are down. Were kind of built that way.Under Diaco, UConn doesnt give up a lot of big plays, using a bend-dont-break style defense that eschews a lot of blitzing and forces opponents to move methodically down the field. The Huskies aree holding the competition to 19.dddddddddddd7 points and an average of 352 yards a game this year after giving up just 19.5 points and 355 yards per game a year ago.We take pride in always being in the game and always having a chance to win the game, said defensive tackle Mikal Myers. But Diaco acknowledges UConn would win more and win by more points if it had a more efficient offense. The Huskies are averaging just 20.3 points and 331 yards per game this season, which ranks 111th out of 128 FBS teams. Last season they averaged just 17.2 points, and just over 310 yards a game, 123rd in the nation.I cant hide from it, Diaco said. Everyone watching the games knows it.Ball control will be a key for UConn this week against Syracuse (1-2). The Orange run an fast-paced offense that snapped the ball a school-record 105 times in a 45-20 loss to South Florida. They average one play about every 20 seconds while on offense.Field position is a huge piece for this model, Diaco said. Time of possession is a huge piece to this model. That, when you play in a game like this, becomes even more critical.---AP college football website: ' ' '

As far as bedtime snacks go, this one is not exactly classic.Heres the concoction that U.S. swimmer Ryan Murphy came up with when he was desperate to get a lot of extra nutrients in a hurry before calling it a day: Handfuls of kale and spinach, followed by some beets, oatmeal, splashes of tart cherry juice and a little bit of mango, all tossed into a blender for a few moments. He chugged it down, too.He knows he needs to get all the nutrients he can, said Alicia Kendig, the sports nutritionist for the U.S. swimming and track and field athletes that are competing in the Rio Games. Some athletes want it to taste good. Ryan knows that he needs to just put all the good stuff in it and get it down. That was his way of getting a salad down right before bed. When chasing gold medals, its whatever it takes. Murphy will likely be thought of as a favorite in the 100- and 200-meter backstroke events in Rio. If he wins, people will hear the story of all the sacrifices hes made in his career. What they probably wont hear about, or see, are the dietary demands on some of the athletes as they prep for an Olympics. The caloric intakes for athletes in certain sports -- swimming among them -- as they train for major competitions like what awaits in Rio are massive, several times more than what the typical adult needs to get through a regular day. The tale of Michael Phelps taking in 12,000 calories a day as he trained for the London Games was exaggerated, though probably only slightly.Oh, they eat a lot, Kendig said.Making sure U.S. athletes get what they need, when they need it, wherever they are in the world is a massive undertaking. No event comes with more pressure on that front than an Olympics. The planning for each games lasts about two years, meaning that when this Olympiad ends there will be people already working on the system that will be used at the next Winter Games in South Korea in 2018.Theres a lot of moving parts, said Terri Moreman, the U.S. Olympic Committee associate director of food and nutrition services -- who was overseeing the unloading of seven tractor-trailer loads of things that were sent from Colorado Springs arriving in Rio on one recent day. It is quite a challenge. You pay attention to the detail, try to stay ahead of it at all times, always anticipate what can go wrong and always have a Plan B.No detail is left to chance. Moreman has been overseeing what was sent to Rio from the United States, along with what the USOC needed to rent or buy in Brazil. Some things were packed up months ago; others will be gotten as needed during the Olympics and Paralympics. A team of nearly a dozen chefs will prepare the food for U.S. athletes and staff will eat.Theres five sport dietitians like Kendig on staff as well, making sure athletes are building their plates the right way. When they get to a certain age, they really start realizing how much nutrition affects how they feel as well as what their bodies look like and the number on the scale, Kendig said. Some of the younger athletes, theyre still kind of exploring, a little more adventurous. The veterans really take it seriously.Kendig has seen some interesting stuff lately. She caught an athlete with his head in the refrigerator; he was busted eating fistfuls of kale, some of which went flying when he broke into laughter. An Olympic track athlete, on a recent training day that was relatively light, decided that he wanted a peanut-butter-and-jelly sandwich -- but because it wasnt a big calorie-burning day, he enjoyed the sandwich with no bread. All he did was stir peanut butter and jelly together, Kendig said.Sacrifice is part of being an elite athlete, though flavor doesnt always have to give. At a swimming training camp near San Antonio, the after-workout immediate reward was an icy cold smoothie with fresh berries and either plant or whey protein. And in the all-you-can-eat training table buffets, there are plenty of pastas, lean meats and fish. And when the Olympics are over, yes, even super-fit athletes are looking for some comfort food. Its McDonalds, Kendig said. Some of them have gone for so long being so dialed in whats healthy and nutrition-packed that its a psychological release. So yes, they all do it. At least french fries. Mel Stottlemyre Jersey . PORTLAND, Ore. -- Defending champion Brooke Henderson shot a 7-under 65 on Thursday to take a two-stroke lead after the opening round of the LPGA Cambia Portland Classic on Thursday.Picking up where she left off from a year ago, when Henderson shot a 21-under 267 to win her first LPGA tournament, the 18-year-old Canadian hit 16 greens and made nine birdies on a warm, cloudless day at the 6,476-yard Columbia Edgewater course.Henderson said a combination of factors allows her to feel at home at Columbia Edgewater.I love tree-lined courses, and thats very much what this course is. With the bent grass, which is kind of what I grew up on, I really like it. It suits my eye, Henderson said. Then winning here, that gives me those extra vibes and adrenaline, which I think will help as the week goes on. This golf course, being out here in the Northwest, in the beautiful temperature, I like wearing long sleeves and pants.Angela Stanford, Demi Runas and Mariajo Uribe each shot 67 to trail Henderson.Runas, whose best career finish is a tie for 25th, and Uribe are looking for their first LPGA victories. Stanford lost in a playoff in the 2003 U.S. Womens Open at Pumpkin Ridge, which has previously played host to the Portland Classic. Uribe and Stanford shot bogey-free rounds.Stanford, who tied for fourth last week in Arkansas, is somewhat of a surprise among the leaders. She hasnt had much success at the Portland Classic, her best finish a tie for eighth in 12 tries.Poana greens are usually not very friendly to me. Its nice to watch the ball go in the hole here. I havent always played well here, so I tried to just put that on the back burner and see if I could carry it over from last week, and it did, Stanford said.Carlota Ciganda, Jaye Marie Green, Ayako Uehara and Daniela Iacobelli shot 68. Four strokes back at 69 are No. 18 Suzann Pettersen, Sarah Jane Smith, Lee-Anne Pace, Briana Mao and Jiayi Zhou.Pettersen is a two-time Portland winner, claiming the 2011 and 2013 tournaments.No. 15 Anna Nordqvist is among 12 players at 70. No. 9 Stacy Lewis shot even-par 72, as did Austin Ernst, the 2014 Portland champion.Henderson, starting early in the morning on the back nine, was only 1-under through seven holes. But she birdied three of the next four holes, then finished on fire while playing the front nine, making consecutive birdies on holes 5 through 8. Henderson just missed a fifth consecutive birdie, sliding a 15-foot putt past the left side of the hole at the par-4 ninth. It was a bogey at the par-4, 391-yard fourth that helped ignite Hendersons string of four consecutive birdies. That was a dumb hole ... a hole with my length I could have taken advantage of. The bogey bothered me a little. I knew I had two par-5s coming up, so I tried to focus on them, Henderson said.In her last six rounds at Columbia-Edgewater, counting last years Monday qualifier, Henderson is 32-under par, all six rounds in the 60s.Last year, Henderson won the Portland Classic by eight strokes, and became the third youngest champion in LPGA Tour history. Since winning her maiden event, Henderson has soared to become No. 2 ranked, and two weeks ago won the Womens PGA Championship.Henderson is attempting to become Portlands first back-to-back champion since Annika Sorenstam won the 2002 and 2003 tournaments. The Portland Classic is normally played in late August, but moved up because the LPGA is taking three weeks off for the Olympics. The Portland stop is typically popular among the tours best players, but with the U.S. Open scheduled for next week in California, only 13 of the worlds top 50 entered this year. The Portland Classic is the LPGA Tours longest-running non-major, now in its 45th year. The purse is $1.3 million, with $195,000 going to the winner. Air Max Pas Cher Outlet . ESPN rounds up all the reaction from up and down the Suzuka paddock following Friday practice for the 2016 Japanese Grand Prix.MercedesLewis Hamilton:?Its been a really good day with no problems on the car which is great. We managed to get plenty of laps in but theres still some work to be done overnight in order to find more pace. Thats a work in progress and hopefully well be going into Sunday in good shape. Its great to be here in Japan and Im excited to get out on track again for qualifying tomorrow.Nico Rosberg:?Its been a case of finding my way today. It began with quite a lot of under-steer and we had to work through the setup in order to find a better balance on the car. In the afternoon, the medium tyre didnt seem as strong as the hard as we saw in Malaysia. However, on the soft tyre we showed strong one-lap pace, the balance felt good and the track was really exciting to drive. It looks like were ahead of the Ferraris but it remains to be seen as to where we are compared to the Red Bulls.Paddy Lowe, Executive Director (Technical):?Its great to be back here at this fantastic circuit with all the amazing and enthusiastic fans at every turn. It was nice to get some dry weather which we didnt get last year and it allowed us to run through our programme and execute to plan, looking at all three tyres on both single and long-run pace. At this stage, our strategy for Sunday still remains wide open and we need to go through all the data overnight in order to start making plans for the race.FerrariSebastian Vettel:?Overall,l I am not entirely happy with the balance of the car today, but I am sure this is something we can work on. I didnt try the Medium compound, we focused more on the Soft tyre in the morning, and on the very Hard tyre in the afternoon. We tried to do our homework, but the balance is not there yet. We will now need to look at the data and see where we are, also compared to the others.Ideally you would always love to have more grip around here, because it feels fantastic if you do, but I am sure we can tune the balance and distribute the grip a bit better, so that we will be in a better shape tomorrow. As for race expectations, a podium finish is always possible, there might even be rain at some point. It sure doesnt help if you start further at the back (because of the grid penalty), but overtaking is possible, even if it is not so easy.Kimi Raikkonen:?It was one of those days that seem a bit tricky but in the end go for better. My feeling with the car was not very nice, I suffered a lot with understeer and I was struggling with the balance through the first sector, but the lap time was ok . In the end we got a bit better, but we are not still where we want to be. In the second session I had a small electric issue, likely with a sensor, but we changed it and it was ok. Tomorrow is another day, well try to work on small things to try to improve. If we get the car where we want and with a better feeling for sure we can go quite a bit faster.WilliamsValtteri Bottas:?I think it was a pretty straightforward Friday. We got everything done that we had planned and there were no big issues. Balance-wise, Im already pleased with the car but we still need to focus on tyre performance. I think getting more performance out of the soft tyre over one lap is the key, and then on the long runs we need to get both of the compounds working at 100%.Felipe Massa:?It was a normal Friday. We were mostly just trying to understand the tyres, the different aspects of the car and doing the long runs. I think we need to analyse where we are compared to our competitors tonight because this weekend is going to be another fight, but I hope we can have a good one.Rob Smedley, Head of Performance Engineering:?It was a fairly normal Friday for us and we completed most of the work that we needed to in FP1 and FP2. We tested different suspension geometries and aerodynamic components, which well have to analyse tonight, but everything looked reasonably good. In the afternoon we concentrated on the balance of the car and tyre performance, and it all went smoothly. Everything looks good on both low and high fuel runs so I think we are in our normal position, maybe a little bit further forward. The weekend has started quite well.Red BullDaniel Ricciardo:?Its good to be back at this circuit, I really like this place. We had a pretty good day today and a positive afternoon. We made some improvements from this morning and the lap we had to abort because of the Virtual Safety Car looked to be in the 32s which was close to Kimis time. Our long run pace towards the end of FP2 on the hard tyre looked pretty solid as well.If we can hook the car up for quali, we can be close to Mercedes and probably be ahead of the Ferraris, we can definitely squeeze a bit more out of the car tomorrow. There have been improvements from our side and the Ferraris so we expect the rest of the season to be tighter. If it rains for quali, it wont hurt us and we might even be able to get on the front row. Im ready either way, this place is fun in both wet and dry conditions.Max Verstappen:?I think this has been one of the strongest Fridays so far. Everything seemed to work quite well, car set-up was good and we looked quick on both tyres today, even on the Hard. We were hampered by the Virtual Safety Car on our short runs so the tyres lost a bit of temperature, this meant we didnt show our full potential. After Malaysia we are looking for another good result, this track should suit us and we are close to the top guys at the moment. Ferrari are in the mix, short runs look ok but Im not sure how their long ones are going, Im hoping we can handle them though. There are talks of rain for later in the weekend which for us I think will play into our hands, we cant be sure but if it comes I think we can be even stronger in qualifying and the race.Force IndiaNico Hulkenberg:?Theres not a huge amount to say really because it was a routine, standard day of practice. We just worked through the run plan with no dramas and collected all the information on the different tyre compounds. We looked competitive, but its only practice, so I would expect much tighter margins tomorrow when we get to qualifying. Im feeling positive, though, because weve started well and Im already pretty happy with the car balance.Sergio Perez:?Its looking like a promising weekend based on our performance today. Of course, the track conditions were very good and you never know what the rest of the weekend will bring, but today everything was working well. We looked quite competitive in most conditions -- on high and low fuel -- and on all the tyre compounds. The set-up of the car was very good from the start of the day and weve not moved far away from this.Robert Fernley, Deputy Team Principal:?Its been a pretty straightforward and satisfying day of practice. The team achieved the objectives of the run plan, which included some test items split between the two cars. It was encouraging to see that our baseline set-up was not too far away from ideal and both drivers were pretty content with the feel of their cars by the end of the afternoon.Track conditions were very good today with relatively consistent track temperatures and very little wind to upset the cars. The programme included the usual combination of performance runs and long runs across the three tyre compounds, which means we have plenty of information to help our decisions overnight.RenaultJolyon Palmer:?It was a shame to lose time in Free Practice 1 this morning as Id never properly driven here before. In contrast, everything was good in the afternoon and theres more pace in the car than my lap time showed. Its quite a technical circuit so I need to get the sequences just right, which is something to work on tomorrow. Otherwise, it feels as though we have a similar pace to that we had in Malaysia at this point. It bodes well for the rest of the weekend.Kevin Magnussen:?We completed a lot of running today and it went pretty well. I ended the day fifteenth fastest, which is always nice to see but its only Friday and a bit too early to draw any conclusions. The car feels good; we have a bit of work to do now to get ready for tomorrows qualifying but things so far are encouraging.Bob Bell, Chief Technical Officer:?We got through most of the programme today despite losing time on Jolyons car with an electrical problem. It cut his session short during FP1 and lost us time normally used for information-gathering, but we recovered well in the afternoon and got what we needed in terms of data for qualifying and the race. It wasnt the best start to the weekend but we have a good idea on what we need to do over the next two days. The balance of the car is reasonably strong and I think that we will be able to maintain the level of progress we have seen in the last few races.Toro RossoDaniil Kvyat:?It was a decent Friday, we did a good job. My running was slightly compromised in FP2, but we know that in tomorrows FP3 we will be back to normal and we will see where we are compared to the others. Weve collected plenty of data regarding the tyres, which is what we wanted, and we now have enough information to analyse tonight. Considering what happened today. I will definitely go for some octopus sushi for dinner tonight!Carlos Sainz:?A challenging day -- obviously a track like Suzuka is always defiant regarding the set-up and driver, but Ive definitely enjoyed it a lot out there today. Driving here is one of the most exciting weekends of the year for me -- ?I really enjoy every single lap, it doesnt matter if iits during a short run or a long run, its just fantastic!Im happy with today.dddddddddddd. Weve been able to complete plenty of laps without any problems and, from a performance point of view, I think its looking very similar to Malaysia: we look good on Friday, but we know it wont be easy to do the same all weekend long -- finishing today in the top ten is very nice and well do our best to maximize the potential of the car during the rest of the weekend.Phil Charles, Chief Race Engineer:?I am quite pleased as we have ticked off most, if not all, of our program targets today. Some aero work first thing in the morning and some decent tyre data on long runs this afternoon. In terms of our performance I think we are ok -- it is a very tight midfield here and we know our now customary straight line speed deficit is a hindrance. However, the first sector is complementary to our package as we enjoy high speed sweepy cornering. We do have a little bit more work to do in sector 2 tonight though. Daniil had a gearbox issue on his car at the end of FP1. The mechanics managed to change the gearbox in time, but we were not able to maximize the set up for FP2. Hopefully, we can uncover a bit more performance in the setup and drivers in sector 2 tomorrow.?Other highlights of the weekend so far for me have been how passionate and creative the Japanese fans are here and secondly the return of Daniils octopus that you might have heard him talking about on the radio in P1. ?This is actually something which has visited him before in a race in 2014. It gave quite a high level of confusion back then when he said there is an octopus on the front of the car. It was only after the race that we truly understood what he was talking about - a collection of long and thin tyre rubber marbles had gathered on the aerial on top of the cockpit in front of him.SauberFelipe Nasr:?It has been a productive day here in Suzuka. FP1 was mainly about testing different set-ups in order to get a better read for the balance of the car. In the afternoon we concentrated on short and long runs on different tyre compounds for qualifying as well as race preparation. Now we have to analyse the data collected, so that we can find improvements for the rest of the weekend.Marcus Ericsson:?It has been a decent day. In the morning we tried different configurations on the aerodynamic side, which we have to evaluate more in-depth. Later on in FP2, I was a bit unlucky with the yellow flags, so it was difficult to get a feeling for the car on low fuel. The long run on medium tyres felt ok, but we need to have a closer look at the data.McLarenFernando Alonso: Its been a tough day, generally. Our most important objective for this afternoon was to understand the compounds across the length of a long-run, and we did that. Nonetheless, were not yet happy with the set-up and we need to do some more work this evening. Were still investigating the cause of this mornings spin -- it looks like there were some aerodynamic issues with the rear wing.Luckily, we didnt damage the car and could continue running until the end of FP1. We need to find something extra tonight -- lets just hope it doesnt rain in FP3 tomorrow as we need to understand the changes we make tonight ahead of qualifying and the race. Getting into Q3 could be quite difficult now.Jenson Button:?On single-lap pace, the car doesnt actually look too bad -- I just didnt get a great lap this afternoon. But if we can get a good lap together -- which well hopefully do tomorrow -- we may be able to get into the top 10. However, our long-run pace is more of an issue -- and thats something we need to solve as its usually a forte of mine, and it wasnt today. The degradation is significant, were some way off, and were looking into the reasons why. I think theres something not quite right, as opposed to there being a set-up issue; but hopefully we can fix it by tomorrow. Id love it to rain -- that would help us have a chance of a good result here.Eric Boullier, McLaren-Honda Racing Director:Its always fantastic to arrive at Suzuka: the colour, the fans, the banners, the gifts, they all add up to making the experience special every single time. This year is no different, and its been extremely encouraging to see the rising number of people wearing McLaren-Honda caps and T-shirts in the grandstands today.Turning our attention to the racetrack itself, Fernando suffered a small off during the mornings session -- an unexpected lack of grip between the two Spoon corners caused him to lose the rear end and skim the barriers. Fortunately, the damage was minimal -- just a broken rear-wing end-plate -- and caused minimal delay. In the afternoon, both drivers worked hard to improve balance and driveability. While not completely successful, the changes enabled us to make progress, and we go into the evening looking to improve our cars set-up further ahead of tomorrows qualifying session.Yusuke Hasegawa, Honda R&D Co Ltd Head of F1 Project & Executive Chief Engineer:?The fans here at Suzuka have given us such a warm welcome, and I am very happy to be back at our home race in Japan. As usual, its tricky to know where we stand after Friday running because of the changeable track conditions during the weekend, and the testing of various set-ups on both cars.Fernando was happier with his balance and we were able to run stable lap times, so we can say that he had a fairly decent Fridays running. Jenson was less satisfied, especially with the tyre conditions, but his time gap to Fernando was not so off, so we are expecting him to improve during tomorrows running.ManorEsteban Ocon:?I love everything about the fans, the track and Japan in general. I thought I might, but now Im here I cant get enough of the place. I really enjoyed my first day of practice here; its a really technical and demanding track. I love chicanes in general and these are pretty quick, so Im really enjoying driving them.Weve tried a few different things on set-up and I think weve ended up in a good place as far as direction for tomorrow goes. Our long pace looks promising. Theres still some work to do on our qualifying pace, but Im optimistic that we can have a good fight on Sunday.Pascal Wehrlein:?Ive been really looking forward to getting out on track here. Its not an easy circuit to master but Im quite happy so far and I have a much better feeling with the car than the last race. We seem to have made some progress, which is good. Its an awesome track to drive; a fantastic challenge and some fun corners.Im feeling pretty positive about it, even though its not one of the most well-suited for our car. The most important thing is that weve found a good set-up and weve improved step-by-step through the two sessions. Im also certain that we can squeeze a few drops more from the car in FP3 and be better for qualifying. So with a good run at tomorrow morning, it can go well for us here, I hope.Dave Ryan, Racing Director:?A reasonably good start to our weekend here in Suzuka. Pascal and Esteban seem to have got to grips with this track quite well and are enjoying it, plus theyre responding well to the steps weve taken to improve the car since Sepang. It wasnt all plain sailing today; there are a few things we need to work on. But looking at the big picture, we seem to have made some progress since Malaysia and thats good to see.HaasEsteban Gutierrez:?It was quite a tricky day. Weve been trying to experiment a little bit, trying to find the best compromise in every area of the car. We now have a pretty good idea. We tested a few things so we can get ready for tomorrow. Unfortunately, we ended up with a failure in the afternoon, but this will not harm us in continuing our program for Saturday and our focus on qualifying.Romain Grosjean:?First off, this is always a great track to drive. We have a lot of fun around here. Clearly, we had some issues with the brakes today, which didnt make our life easy, but eventually we worked our way around it. We still have a lot of work to do tonight trying to balance the car. Its one of those tracks where the timing is very tight. Two tenths of a second can make a big difference. Lets hope we find those.Guenther Steiner, Team Principal:?In general we had a good testing session. In FP1 though, Romain had an issue with his brakes. He went long and into the barrier and broke his front wing. Nothing else was damaged, so that was a straightforward fix with a change of front wing. We obviously lost a bit of time. In FP2, Romains car was flawless but Esteban had a problem. We had an issue with the turbocharger, which were still investigating why and where it came from. We had to stop his session as he was stranded out on the track. With the rest we learned quite a bit. We still have to work on the setup for tomorrow and the balance of the car, but were not looking too bad.PirelliPaul Hembery, Pirelli Motorsport Director:?The drivers experienced quite slippery conditions at the beginning of free practice. This improved as more rubber was laid on the surface. Continuing the pattern that we have seen frequently this season, last years pole time was already beaten in FP1, but with rain due tomorrow, we are likely to see a different type of challenge in qualifying. Today there was a lot of work on the hard compound, which seems to be a very good race tyre in these conditions. However if we experience cooler conditions on Sunday, then the track could swing back towards the medium compound. ' ' '

ISTANBUL, Turkey -- Arsenal midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain faces at least three months on the sidelines, dealing a blow to the teams early-season hopes. The England international injured his left knee in Arsenals Premier League opener on Saturday which ended in a 3-1 loss to Aston Villa. Manager Arsene Wenger said Tuesday that Oxlade-Chamberlain has a posterior cruciate problem -- "a ligament which is stretched"-- but he is not expected to require surgery. Wenger said Oxlade-Chamberlain was facing at least six weeks out, but the player later said he faced a lay-off twice as long. "Gutted im injured so early in the season," Oxlade-Chamberlain wrote on Twitter. "But Im going to be working hard to hopefully be back playing in 3 months." Oxlade-Chamberlain seems likely to miss Englands key World Cup qualifiers in September and October, and a potential playoff in November. More immediately, he is out of Arsenals Champions League playoff against Fenerbache, which starts in Istanbul on Wednesday. He will also be sorely missed in the Premier League, especially after Arsenal opened the season by losing to Aston Villa on Saturday. Jackie Robinson Jersey .Y. -- Buffalo Bills coach Doug Marrone has drawn on his Syracuse connections once again by hiring Rob Moore to take over as receivers coach. Aroldis Chapman Yankees Jersey . Kyle Denbrook, a soccer player from Saint Marys University, took the CIS male athlete of the week honour. Stanley, a fourth-year business administration student from Charlottetown, scored both goals in a 2-0 win over Dalhousie on Friday and tallied again in a 1-0 win over Saint Marys on Sunday. .ca looks back at the stories and moments that made the year memorable. Don Larsen Jersey . Coach Mike Munchak says Fokou stretched ligaments in his left knee Oct. 13 against Seattle, which could keep out up to five weeks even though the linebacker didnt need surgery. Johnny Damon Yankees Jersey . Oaklands loss to Seattle clinched the ALs best record for the Red Sox with one day to spare in the regular season. "I think everybody was kind of watching," catcher David Ross said. "Demp (Ryan Dempster) came out before he went to the bullpen and was just yelling that they lost. ASHBURN, Va. -- Ziggy Hood didnt let a foot injury slow him down. He put some in-soles in his cleats and worked his way back into the NFL.A year after tearing the plantar fascia in his left foot, the 29-year-old defensive lineman showed the Washington Redskins he could still rush the passer as well as he did earlier in his career. And Hood didnt just earn a roster spot -- hell start Monday night against the team that drafted him, the Pittsburgh Steelers.Every day he brought his lunch pail, defensive end Chris Baker said Wednesday. Hes one of those guys that if a young guy wants to know how you can stay in the league, you want to watch a guy like Ziggy because he goes 100 percent all day. He knew what was at stake this year, and he went out there and worked his butt off and made this team.Washingtons coaching staff didnt know what to expect from Hood after signing him to a futures contract over the winter, especially after the injury. But the 2009 first-round pick made his presence felt all training camp and in preseason games to earn the starting defensive end job opposite Baker.Once we got the pads on him was really when he stood out, coach Jay Gruden said. The 1-on-1 drills, the team drills, he was in the backfield being very disruptive. It was a consistent thing. It wasnt like one day he did well and the next day he didnt do anything. He was consistently a nuisance and a problem for our offense.Being consistently a nuisance was part of Hoods career revitalization plan. Since his time in Pittsburgh ended following the 2013 season, Hood felt himself succeeding in flashes and disappearing for stretches. That wasnt going to work. He went back to the style and mentality that made him a starter with the Steelers.A private coach told him not every sack is going to be pretty, so Hood ditched the finesse and went back to a power rushing game. One of my most favorite things to do is to weightlift, so I have to move that from there and put it on the field, Hood said. WWhy not use my power and leverage that I got and use it on the field? Thats what I was able to do this training camp.ddddddddddddIt was never going to be a matter of Hood not working hard enough. He insists hes not old -- or at least doesnt feel old -- but he had to show he still had something in the tank.By the time the fourth preseason game rolled around, Hood didnt even have to travel or play. He was already a lock to be on the 53-man roster.Ziggy was always a hard-working professional, so its no surprise to me that hes still sustaining himself and being helpful to a football team, Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said on a conference call Wednesday. Hes always had a good natural get-off. Hes always working at his craft. He realizes that as a professional, detail is an element of it, and when he was with us that was always his approach to getting better.Thats the lesson Hood taught current Steelers defensive end Cameron Heyward, who still considers the veteran a friend.Ziggy was always a great teammate, unselfish, Heyward said. He came to work every day with his hard hat on.With hard hat and pads on, Hood was at his best at Redskins camp. The Missouri product learned to play the edge and inside and took advantage of a defense that allowed him more freedom to get to the quarterback. The more you know, the better opportunity you (give) yourself to get out on the field, Hood said. I was fortunate enough and blessed to make the roster here predicated from hard work and determination and was able to go out there and do something.Note: Shawn Lauvao won the starting left guard job over banged-up Spencer Long. Lauvao showed he was healthy after five surgeries to repair damage to his left ankle and right foot.---AP Sports freelancer Dan Scifo in Pittsburgh contributed to this report.---AP NFL website: and ' ' '

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Malcolm Bell threw for 295 yards and two scores and ran for another to lead North Carolina Central past Bethune-Cookman 31-14 Saturday night in a game that was delayed nearly three hours due to lightning. The win for North Carolina Central (3-2, 2-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic) snapped a six-game losing streak against Bethune-Cookman. The Eagles hadnt beaten the Wildcats since the first meeting in the series on Sept. 24, 1994.Jamaruz Thompkins gave Bethune-Cookman (0-4, 0-2) a 7-0 lead after his 17-yard run capped a 10-play, 80-yard drive for the Wildcats.Bell responded with TD tosses to Khalil Stinson for 25 yards and Glen Calvin for 2 yards to make it 14-7.Ramone Simpson led North Carolina Central in rushing with 19 carries for 116 yards and a TD. He added 42 yards receiving.Frank Brown had six receptions for 109 yards and a TD for Bethune-Cookman. Tom Brady Jersey Retro . Brett Kulak and Jackson Houck of the Vancouver Giants were each charged with assault causing bodily harm on Aug. 18, according to the B.C. court services. Custom Sports Jerseys . It was hard for Luck to pull off another comeback, or even get into the end zone, while standing on the sideline. Rivers threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to rookie Keenan Allen and Nick Novak kicked four field goals to give the Chargers a 19-9 victory against the Colts on Monday night. . PETERSBURG, Fla. Sports Jerseys For Sale . The Croatian served 21 aces and hit 42 winners against Sijsling, who double-faulted to give Cilic a 4-3 lead in the deciding set. "All the players, they know me and they were really happy to see me and they were really happy that this is over for me," Cilic said. Authentic Tom Brady Jersey . Pedro scored from a pass by Lionel Messi in the 33rd minute and added two more goals in the 47th and 72nd after Valdes saved his second penalty in four days following his stop in Wednesdays 4-0 over Ajax in the Champions League. CLEMSON, S.C. -- With all the problems, mistakes and numerous errors its hard to take a lot of positives from Clemsons 2-0 start.Deshaun Watson threw three touchdowns as the second-ranked Tigers held off Troy 30-24 on Saturday in a game that will mostly be remembered for bad decision making by the defending Atlantic Coast Conference champions.Front and center is Ray-Ray McClouds embarrassing mental gaffe when he flipped the ball on the 1-yard line as he was cruising into the end zone to celebrate a 75-yard punt return TD. McCloud went through with the flash, posing for the fans, and rolling around with teammates after Clemsons first punt return touchdown in three years. Moments later, replays showed McCloud never brought the ball across the goal line.Youre going to leave this game thinking about my mistake, McCloud said.To his credit, the sophomore didnt hang his head and go cower in a corner. McCloud finished with seven catches and a career best 86 yards receiving.Still, many will not only see Clemsons mistakes in this game, but on the season as well. The Tigers (2-0) were out of synch on offense and could not break away from the Trojans (1-1) until the fourth quarter. Watson hit beefy defensive lineman Christian Wilkins for a 1-yard score in Clemsons jumbo goal line package, then connected with Deon Cain on a 23-yard TD pass for a 27-10 lead.Troy rallied with two touchdowns in the last five minutes, the second one with 44 seconds to go. But Cain grabbed the on-side kick attempt and Clemson ran out the clock on a second straight victory that was too close for most of the crowd at Death Valley.Everybody wants to see us score 50 points, 60 points and everybody wants it now, Watson said. Were not going to do that. First weve got to execute and find our rhythm. The Tigers couldnt get out of their own way much against Troy -- most notably on McClouds dynamic, 75-yard punt return right before halftime that should have been a Tigers touchdown but turned into a Troy touchback.Clemson coach Dabo Swinney told McCloud it was a great run, but he needed to grow up, get back out there and do his best for Clemson. When he told me to grow up, thats what I had to do, McCloud said.Watson also did enough to get the win with 292 yards passing, but didnt do much to enhance his Heisman Trophy chances. His performance did bolsster Troys confidence.ddddddddddddThats the Heisman front-runner, you know what Im saying, Brandon Silvers, Troys quarterback, said in praise of the Trojan defense.THE TAKEAWAYTROY: The Trojans strong defensive effort on Clemsons high-powered offense -- they intercepted Watson twice -- will served them well when the Sun Belt Conference season begins against New Mexico State in two weeks.CLEMSON: The Tigers put up another sloppy offensive showing for much of Saturday and could be poised for a fall from No. 2 in the Top 25. Clemson needs to find its gear soon before Atlantic Coast Conference play begins at Georgia Tech on Sept. 22.POLL IMPLICATIONSCLEMSON: Get ready for a late-summer slide for the Tigers. The offense has not looked like the unit that matched up with Alabama in January and that was expected to be even better with the return of injured 1,000-yard receiver Mike Williams. The Tigers 19-13 win at Auburn last week could be excused as a team going through early season growing pains at a difficult Southeastern Conference venue. Its a little harder to explain this performance.KEY NUMBERSTROY: The Trojans out-rushed Clemson 141-122 and did it by limited the Tigers two 1,000-yard rushers last year in Watson and Wayne Gallman to a combined 89 yards.CLEMSON: Watson had two interceptions in a game for the just the fourth time in his college career. The 6-foot-2 junior has won all four of those contests, however.INJURY REPORTCLEMSON: Starting linebacker Ben Boulware was on the ground in pain in the fourth quarter and walking around on crutches. But coach Dabo Swinney said Boulware got his right ankle rolled up on and the injury does not appear to be serious.UP NEXTTROY: The Trojans continue their non conference schedule when they take on Southern Mississippi next week, the first regular-season meeting between the schools since 1977. Troy lost to the Golden Eagles 30-27 in the 2008 New Orleans Bowl.CLEMSON: The Tigers play their final pre-Atlantic Coast Conference contest with FCS opponent South Carolina State. Dont expect that to be a tight game: Clemson has won the three career meetings by a combined score of 179-20.---AP college football website: ' ' '
